Sonia L. Ellerbe

Ms. Sonia L. Ellerbe 69, affectionately known as "Mu" was called home Saturday, January 30, 2021. She was born on May 20, 1951 to the late Arthur Covington and Emma Covington in the Philadelphia Community, where she lived her entire life.

Sonia received her Christian upbringing in the Philadelphia United Methodist Church, where at an early age, she confessed Christ as her Lord and Savior. She later became a faithful member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Ellerbe NC.  

Sonia L. Ellerbe loved the Lord and was a true example of a Proverbs 31 Woman, clothed with strength and dignity. To know her was to love her. She brought sparks of joy, life, wisdom and love into every room that she entered.  God gave and continued to nurture her Servant’s heart as she blessed the lives of many, a work ordained of her by God, to which she was faithful and true to. Sonia would cook hearty meals for whoever was in need and always welcomed company. Sonia also, dedicated her time to raising money for the church. For thirty plus years, Sonia gave innumerable gifts to those in her community, especially the elderly, on Christmas Eve. For those who did not know, she was your Secret Santa. She enjoyed throwing the biggest Easter Egg Hunt, for the young and old, this included every candy imaginable, every household item you'll ever need, and if you were wondering what to cook that night you just might find a whole chicken. Sonia was family-centered, driven and committed. She was a guardian, a gift and a treasure to her friends and family.

This virtuous woman of God imparted words of wisdom, encouragement, support, affirmation and kindness into everyone that she encountered. She wanted you to, know your worth. She would ask in a powerful and nurturing way, “Who are you?” and she waited patiently until your response was, “Somebody.” She desired for you to be assured of this truth and live accordingly.

Sonia was proceeded in death by her husband Walter P. Ellerbe Sr., daughter Sonya De’Shunn Ellerbe, son Kendrick Damond Ellerbe, and her father and mother Arthur and Emma Covington. Surviving are her four children Walter L. Ellerbe Jr (Dominique), Eric L. Ellerbe (Silvia), Markita T. Wright (Russell), Shakita D. Ellerbe (Kevin), one brother Terry Covington (Deloris) three sisters Lula Harper (Franklin) Emma Mae Ellerbe (Harry) Emma Jean Moore and fourteen Grand Children, three Great Grands, one aunt, six other brother-in-laws, six sister-in-laws and a host of relatives and friends.

Mrs. Sonia L. Ellerbe, will forever be loved and missed by her community, family, and friends because of all the love she showed, wisdom she shared and lives she touched.
