Mrs. Barbara York Dawkins, 69, of Hamlet passed Tuesday, December 22, 2020. Funeral will be Wednesday, December 30, 2020, 2pm at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 685 Ledbetter Road, Rockingham.  Public Viewing Tuesday, December 29, 2020, 2-5pm at Nelson Funeral Home, 1021 E. Washington Street, Rockingham, NC.

In accordance with COVID-19 guidelines mask are required and social distancing is suggested.

Obituary

Barbara York Dawkins was born on December 16, 1951 to the late Maggie Mae Kelly. Barbara was granted her wings as she departed this life on Tuesday, December 22, 2020.
 

Barbara was educated through Richmond County Schools. Upon completing her schooling she joined the workforce at a local rest home then later gained employment at Hamlet Hospital until her health began to fail her.

At a very young age Barbara accepted Christ into her life. Barbara was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Hamlet North Carolina. Barbara was a member of the Choralette’s Gospel singing group. She later joined Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Robert Taylor. Barbara served faithfully in the church as an Usher, choir member and actively as Deacon until his health declined.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband James C. Dawkins, her mother, one brother Peter Kelly, one sister Beverly A. Davis, two grandchildren Jamaris Dawkins and Jaquan Bailey and two brother-in-laws Thomas S. Dawkins, Preston S. Dawkins.

 Barbara was a devoted wife to James Dawkins for 26 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, devoted friend and sister to many. Her fiery spirit and selflessness left an lasting impact on many. Barbara loved life, helping others and spending time with family and friends.

 Barbara leaves to cherish her memories. Eight children: Velma Dawkins of High Point NC; Sergeant Robert Kelly Thomasville, NC; Tenisha (Calvin) Riggins of Rockingham NC; Mary Ann Dawkins of Hamlet, NC; James Dawkins Jr. of Hamlet, NC; Vercie Dawkins of Greensboro, NC; Tiffany York of the home; Shanta Kelly of the home.   Three bonus children Boatswain’s Mate Chief Petty Officer Anthony J. Murphy, Private First Class Richard E. Murphy Jr.; Fidericia (Staff Sergeant Corey) Adams. Twenty-four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; three sister-in-laws: Vinita Edmonds, Allison Murphy and Tammy Dawkins. One brother-in-law Walter Davis. Three Godchildren Marcus Jamison, LaShana Shubert and Lynn McKinnon. A special son Brian Bowden. A special brother Deacon James Little. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she loved dearly.
