Obituary

Mrs. Colene Smith Ellerbe, 78, the daughter of the late Mr. George "Buster" McLeod and Mrs. Mozella Smith, was born in Little Rock, South Carolina on December 10, 1942.  She departed this life on December 30, 2020 in First Health in Moore County, North Carolina.

Ms. Colene attended Hamlet, NC schools, Capital Highway School and Monroe High School and completed educational training at Richmond Community College. She worked in the textile industry finishing her career in textile as a quality control inspector for Fruit of the Looms Company.  Later, she worked as a tour bus driver for Richmond County Senior citizens at RCH as a Health Care Aid worker for Monarch and Transcending Minds.

At an early age Ms. Colene became a member of First Baptist Church 329 West Avenue in Hamlet, North Carolina.  She held several offices in church from superintendent of Sunday school, various choirs, and associate pastor ending with the honorable position of Pastor Emeritus.  While hosting these positions, she acquired memberships in the Eastern Stars (Palestine 79), Pee Dee Association, Zion Association and the NAACP.  She held a position of Ministerial Chairperson for the Hamlet Ministerial Association (Alliance).

She leaves to cherish her memories: children, James A. Smith (Washington, DC), Maurice W. Smith, Sr. (Linda) (Rockingham, NC), Sonja Y. Russell (Charlotte, NC), and Donald R. McLendon, Jr. of Hamlet, NC; brother George Jr.; deceased brothers, John Wesley and Bobby McLeod all of (Dillon, SC) and Monroe McLeod of (PA); one sister, Rosenia Alston of (Hamlet, NC); seven grandchildren, Maurice Jr., Marquita, Antonio, Chanay, Joaquim, Byron and Sija; nine great-grandchildren; Uncle Albert Smith (Lillie M.); a special niece, Kim Thompson; Two nephews, Eric and Malcolm Alston; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
