Mrs. Bernice Bennett, 98, of Montgomery County, MD formerly of Wallace, SC, passed Monday, February 1, 2021. A Graveside service is scheduled for Noon, Wednesday February 10, 2021 at Wayman Chapel AME Zion Church Cemetery, Hamlet, NC. A Public Viewing will be held at Nelson Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 from 10:30-11:00am.
In the early dawn, on the morning of February 1, 2021 the Lord called one of his beloved angel’s home. Bernice Williams Bennett transitioned peacefully from her earthly body to her heavenly body with her family by her side.
Bernice or “Miss Bernice”, was the daughter of the late Adam and Patsy Williams. She was born in Chesterfield County, South Carolina on January 15th, 1924. She attended the local schools in Marlboro County, South Carolina. As the eldest child of ten siblings, she left home and worked as a domestic worker for a family in Cheraw, South Carolina. She later met and married her love, Wallace Bennett. They built a home in Wallace, South Carolina on the family land, where they reared their four children. They were married for fifty-six years, until Wallace transitioned in 2005.
She was a faithful member of Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Hamlet, North Carolina.
A humble spirit, “Miss Bernice” never had an unkind word to say about anyone. She spent many hours tending to her garden, and making her house a home for her family. To this day, her pineapple coconut cake is legendary!
In 2011, “Miss Bernice” came to live with her eldest daughter in Maryland. While in Maryland, she continued to exercise her faith, by worshipping at Agape A.M.E. Church, in Gaithersburg, MD. Here she was hailed as the “Mother of the Church”. She led a very active life in Maryland. She participated in multiple senior citizen programs in the Norbeck Hills community.
She is survived by her children, Gracie Bennett of Olney, MD.; Larry Bennett of Bennettsville, SC.; Carol Bennett of Cheraw, SC, and Patricia (Robert) Peterson of Clinton, MD. She is also survived by four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Stephanie Bennett of Capitol Heights, MD.; Ebonie(Damian) Farr-Brannon of Sugar Hill, GA.; Robert (Aryane)Peterson of Suitland, MD; Ryan Peterson of Silver Spring, MD and two great-grandchildren, William Gillespie, III and Karis Farr-Brannon. Additionally, she is survived by two siblings, Mable Williams of Hamlet, NC and Ethel Blackwell of Westbury, NY. Along with, three sisters-in-law, Rosa Williams of Upper Marlboro, MD.; Melane Johnson of Hampton, VA, and Dorothy Bennett of Hampton, VA, and a host of nephews and nieces.
