Arthur T. McDonald, Sr.,72, Rockingham, passed on Sunday, October 15, 2023.  A Celebration of life will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, October 22, 2023, at New Direction House of Prayer, 151 Mizpah Road, Rockingham, NC 28379.  Public Viewing, Saturday, October 21, 2023, 1:00pm- 3:00pm at Nelson Funeral Home, 1021 E Washington Street Rockingham, NC 28379.  Nelson Funeral Service is serving the family.

Obituary

Arthur Thomas McDonald Sr., also known as “Skip”, to his family, was born on September 2, 1951, in Rockingham, NC to William Brower and the late Nancy McDonald Gould. He gained his heavenly wings surrounded by love on Sunday, October 15, 2023. He was preceded in death by his mom Nancy McDonald Gould; and four siblings, Lafayette, Renetta, Toni, and William Jr.

Skip grew up in the Ashley Chapel community, where he played basketball throughout his school years. He received his high school diploma from Rohanen High in 1969. Following high school he moved to Newark, NJ where he began his trucking career with Teamster Local 701. He started his career with Jones Motor and expanded to multiple companies over the years. In 2016, he became an owner operator for Voyart Trucking created by him and his lovely wife. In March of 2023 he officially retired off the road after 54 years of trucking.

On December 27,1970, Arthur married his queen Voyner “Bonnie” McDonald in Bennettsville, SC, and to this union three sons were born, Cedric, Arthur Jr, and Christopher McDonald. For 16 years they resided in NJ, before relocating back to Rockingham, NC.

Arthur was a member of New Direction House of Prayer, where he served on the deacon board.

He helped to raise many children along with his grandchildren, great -grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Over the years he gained bonus children, grandchildren and great -grandchildren. Skip enjoyed showing his babies how to shoot the tin cans with his gun and watching them play basketball from his days on the back porch.

Arthur leaves to cherish his legacy his wife Voyner Bonnie McDonald; three sons, Cedric (Wanda), Christopher (Kimberly), both of Charlotte, NC; Arthur Jr (Samara) of Monroe, NC; four siblings, Dianne Ham of Temple Hill, MD, Steven Gould (Patricia) of Atlanta, GA, Verna Pearse (Clifton), Debra Douglas (Richard) all of Rockingham, NC; four in -laws Felice of New Jersey, Terry and Maurice of New York, and Donald of North Carolina; fifteen grandchildren Dominique (Cecille), D ’Juana, Tashzna, Mya, Arthur, Brandolyn, Justice, Tashee (Dante), Jalen, Jordan, CJ, Braxton, Samaj, Krisalyn, and Nori; twelve great -grandchildren; three bonus grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
